The family emigrated from Schadeck, near Runkel, on the Lahn river within the present day Hesse previously known as Nassau. The family came to Texas on the first trip of the brig JOHANN DETHARDT which left Bracke harbor on 21 Sep 1844. The ship first stopped on 21 Nov 1844 in Galveston, Texas and were in Lavaca on 03 Dec 1844. The family arrived with the first group to view the site on New Braunfels on 21 Mar 1845. The family was charged with transporting the two church bells from Germany to the new community. These bells were used on 04 Apr 1845 in the dedicatation ceremonies of the foundy of New Braunfels. This story of the bells was quotes Oscar Haas' book. They were listed as #154 to #164. The family was enrolled in Rev. Ervendberg's congregational listing of the German Protestand Church. The family recieved 3 Town Lots. Carl received #35, son Carl #103, and son Philipp #99. (There is a conflict on page 139 and page 519 as to which lot Carl and son Carl received.) Only Carl received an Acre Lot. He received Acre lot #99, a 9 1/2 Bavarian acre lot. When Carl and Elisabeth died in 1845, their children were among the first orphans of the new town. The text states that probate minutes in the courthouse help show how the early courts helped to maintan their welfare. CONFLICT: Gives birth as 11 May 1797 which is baptism date. - [S10] THE FIRST PROTESTANT CHURCH, ITS HISTORY AND ITS PEOPLE 1845-1955, pp. 113-116.
Carl Schaefer and family under the direction of the German Emigration Society was intrusted with the safe delivery of the two original bells used by the First Protestant Church from 1845 until 1894. These two smaller bells have been retired and may be seen as museum pieces in the Seele Parish House. The Schaefers, who landed at Galveston in December 1844, arrived with the first group to view the site of New Braunfels on March 21, 1845. On April 4, 1845 the bells were tolled during the dedication ceremonies of the founding of New Braunfels. The Schaefer family is listed as Charter Members, numbers 154-164.
