Gwendolyn Butler Hierholzer; Birth: Nov. 23, 1915, Helena, Karnes County, Texas, USA; Death: Mar. 26, 2003, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA; Note: From the April 9, 2003 edition of the Wilson County News, Floresville, Texas: Gwendolyn Butler Hierholzer was born in Helena, Karnes County, Texas, on Nov. 23, 1915, the daughter and oldest child of Henry Carlton Butler and Janie Lou Gentry Butler. She passed from this life into eternity on March 26, 2003, in San Antonio, Texas. Following her birth, the family lived in Karnes City for a short time before moving to a farm just south of Fairview in Wilson County, Texas. She grew up in a Christian home, attended school at Fairview, and graduated from Fairview High School in 1933. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to San Antonio where she continued her education, graduating from Brackenridge High School. She then attended Westmoreland College in San Antonio, which later became Trinity University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree and later a Master of Arts degree. The family having returned to Fairview, she began her teaching career in 1935, teaching in the Maxwell School near Loire, west of the Fairview community. She later taught at Hierholzer School, Fairview School, and Black Hill School. Following the consolidation of Black Hill, she taught primarily math at Pleasanton High School, but occasionally other subjects, including Spanish. Upon completion of 30 years of teaching, she retired from Pleasanton High School. Shortly afterwards, she was asked to teach math at Floresville High School for a semester when one of the regular teachers was on leave. Afterwards, she was offered a contract and taught math another 17 years at Floresville High School, retiring in 1984 for a total teaching career of 47 years. During that time, she helped guide many a young person by precept and example into the professional world. Even now, one often hears, "She was my teacher, " and "She was my teacher, too." She also taught piano lessons at home for several years. Mrs. Hierholzer was very proud of her family, some of whom were the relatives of Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas." There is in her family a beautiful old sampler with the lettering, "Talitha Jane Austin, 1846, " made by her great-grandmother. On June 15, 1938, she was married to Otto J. Hierholzer Sr. The ceremony was performed by his cousin, the Rev. Elmer J. Hierholzer, who was at that time the pastor of the Hackberry Street Methodist Church in San Antonio. In addition to her teaching, Mrs. Hierholzer then assumed the duties of a housewife and the rearing and education of three children. She was a very devoted wife and mother, and theirs was a happy home. Their home was on a farm between Floresville and Pleasanton, and she often worked in the field alongside her husband and children. In early life, Mrs. Hierholzer became a member of the Fairview Methodist Church. An accomplished musician, she often was called upon to play the piano during revival meetings at the Methodist and Baptist churches at Fairview. In later years, she transferred her church membership to the Floresville United Methodist Church, where she faithfully attended services as long as her health permitted. She was a longtime member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and later became a charter member of the Womans Society of Christian Service. Preceded in death by: husband on July 12, 1977; father on Feb. 9, 1938; mother on June 16, 1974; brother, Milton H. Butler, on June 11, 1963. Survivors include: three children, E.J. Hierholzer Jr. gave the eulogy. One of her favorite hymns, "Amazing Grace" was sung by her niece, Gwendolyn Elizabeth Gail Butler. Interment followed in the Floresville City Cemetery.
