LTC Leonard William Penkert; Birth: Dec. 1, 1926, Beasley, Fort Bend County, Texas, USA; Death: Jan. 18, 2011, Katy, Harris County, Texas, USA; Inscription: LtCol, US Army Air Force, WW2.
Leonard William Penkert was born on December 1, 1926 in Beasley, Texas to loving parents William Henry and Lona Krause Penkert. Leonard was a life long resident of Ft. Bend County, owner of Penkert Tire Supply, and had farming and ranching interests.
After graduating from high school, Leonard enrolled in Texas A&M, but he was drafted to serve in World War II in the Philippines. While in the Philippines, Leonard participated in the first Aggie Muster on Corregidor Island. The photograph of the first Muster at Corregidor has been circulated around the world at many Aggie events and now resides at the Association of Former Students at Texas A&M in College Station. Leonard returned to Texas A&M two years ago for the reunion of those who attended the first Aggie Muster at Corregidor, and he thoroughly enjoyed the honored event. Upon discharge from service to his country, Leonard enrolled at the University of Texas and graduated with a BBA in 1950.
Leonard then returned to Ft. Bend County to assist his father with the family business, Penkert Tire Supply. On July 9, 1952 Leonard married his beloved wife, LaVerne Schawe Penkert at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rosenberg. They celebrated over 55 years of wedded bliss, and they both cherished their Ft. Bend County roots and love of the land.
Throughout his life, Leonard was an active member of the Rosenberg Rotary Club, and he served as president of the organization. In addition, Leonard was a retired Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserves and for many years he attended weekly reserve meetings. To compliment his tire supply business, Leonard helped to organize the Texas Tire Dealers Association and later held the office of president. Leonard and LaVerne both served as founding members of the Rosenberg Railroad Museum, Rosenberg Revitalization Association, and as active members of St. John's United Church of Christ in Rosenberg.
Leonard passed away from complications due to congestive heart failure on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Hermann Memorial Hospital of Katy with his children at his side.
Leonard is proceeded in death by his parents William and Lona Penkert, his beloved wife, LaVerne, and son-in-law, Dan S. Barker. Survivors include his daughter, Debra (Debbie) Penkert Barker of Fulshear; son William Schawe Penkert of Rosenberg; granddaughter, Amy Katherine Barker Richards and husband Austin of Houston and numerous cousins.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 20 at the Barker home in Fulshear. A memorial service is set for 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2011 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1513 West Street, Rosenberg, TX 77471, Rev. Dr. Dale Staggemeier officiating.
