      Ray stated that he was born in New Braunfels at the family home. It was located near the current intersection of I.H. 35 and South Loop 337 (Rueckle Road exit) south of town. This was just down the road from the Heinrich Voigt place. The Eckermann family moved to San Antonio. Ray remembered Ernst Voigt going to San Antonio to court his sister Anita. Ray was the last appointed rural route mail carrier in the San Antonio area. At the time, both the postmaster and the rural route carriers were political appointments. The rural route carriers were actually paid slightly higher than the postmaster. During the Nixon administration, the selection process was changed (and has continued to change over the years.)

      Raymond Clyde Eckermann, age 91, a veteran of World War II, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2013. He is preceded in death by his lovely wife of 61 years, Margaret Helen Palmer Eckermann and two of his children, Charles N. Eckermann and Janet L. Eckermann. Raymond is survived by two sons, Raymond (Rick) Eckermann and Robert (Bob) Eckermann, eleven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Services: Monday, September 9th at 9:00am at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, Texas 78218. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
