Irene M. Murphy
A requiem mass to honor the life of Irene May (Warwas) Murphy of Davis, who died July 25, 2000, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 28, at St. James Catholic Church, 200 West 14th Street in Davis. She was 63.
Born March 22, 1937, in Arneckeville, Texas, she attended a one-room country school and later high school in nearby Cuero. The fifth of eight children, she was the first to pursue higher education; she received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1960 from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. She qualified as a Registered Nurse soon thereafter.
It was also in San Antonio that she met and married Dr. Frederick A. Murphy, Jr. Irene and Fred renewed their wedding vows in a moving ceremony on the occasion of their 40th anniversary on July 2, 2000, at St. James Catholic Church.
Over the years, Irene and her family lived in Georgia, Colorado, and California. Visits to Europe, Asia, Africa, and a year in Australia marked a life as a devoted mother and wife who constantly labored to educate her children and support the career of her husband, who is Dean Emeritus of the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC-Davis.
Even as she battled cancer in the year before her death, Irene completed a comprehensive history of her extended family. With over 6,000 genealogical entries, 250 photos, and 350 pages of text, her family history book recounts the "courage, patience, and continuing trust in God" of the first Polish immigrants in Texas and their descendants.
She is survived by her husband; her mother, Isabelle (Gawlik) Warwas of Cuero, Texas; four sons, Frederick A. "Rick" Murphy, III, of Atlanta, Georgia; W. Timothy Murphy of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; John G. Murphy and his wife Mary Margaret of Washington, D.C.; Terence D. Murphy and his wife Michelle of Baltimore, Maryland; and two grandsons, Frederick A. "Eric" Murphy, IV, and Matthew T. Murphy, both of Atlanta. She is also survived by her sisters and brothers, Helen (Warwas) Lempa of Cuero, Texas; Herman Warwas of Cuero, Texas; Imelda (Warwas) Schoenherr of Goliad, Texas; Alvin Warwas of Berkeley, California; and Edwin Warwas of Asheville, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her father Wilhelm Warwas and her siblings Joseph and Annette Warwas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the DeWitt County Habitat for Humanity, 124 East Church Street, Cuero, TX 77954.
