Wilburn Paul Fertsch Sr., 75, of Wharton died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999 in a Houston hospital following a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 24, 1924 in Hallettsville, the son of Edmund and Martha Schaefer Fertsch.
Fertsch had been a resident of Wharton County for 55 years and had lived in Wharton since 1962. He was a former resident of Boling and Newgulf.
On Sept. 8, 1946 he married Iva Marie Burns.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. During World War II he was held as a Prisoner of War and received two purple hearts.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Texasgulf Sulphur for 37 years, and then worked in the maintenance dept. of the Wharton I.S.D. for 13 year and was currently working for Don Elliott Autoworld. He was also a self-employed heating and air conditioning technician.
Fertsch was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wharton and the American Legion Post 87 in Wharton, and was an active supporter of all programs of the Wharton I.S.D. and Baylor University.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22 at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Orville Roberts officiated.
Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military graveside honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 87 of Wharton.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Fertsch of Wharton, sons and daughters-in law, Wilburn Paul Jr. and Bunny Fertsch of Wharton and Karl Douglas and Tricia Fertsch of Waco; brother and sister-in-law, Elroy and Mary Fertsch of Hallettsville; grandchildren, Christi Fertsch, Lindsay Fertsch, Andy Fertsch, Jessica Fertsch and Allison Fertsch, mother-in-law, Viola Burns of Boling.
Pallbearers were Vellie Sherrill, Pete Wishert, Irvin Kucera, Russell Burns, Ken Burns, Robert Cerny, Eddie Joseph and Alton Mitchel.
Honorary pallbearers were Mason Muegge, Andy Fertsch, Jesse Crow, T.J. Mills, Lynn Etheridge, Frank Cochran, Floyd Ciruiti, Charles Ciruiti and Jodie Svatek.
If desiring, memorials may be set to a charity of the donor's choice.
Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home, Wharton.
