= TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS, An Account of the Early Settlement of the Broad Top Area, David Ira Foster & Jon D. Baughman, Publ. Youth for Progress, 1969.
When Shaub, Stoner, Sheckler, Stoler Johnston and others settled here, Friggs sold part of the land Names of Settlers ... Frederick Sheckler, Philip Stoner, Martin Stoler and his sons Frederick aged 13 years and John in his tenth year... that massacre in the Wyoming Valley, July 2 1t78 so worked on the feelings of Johnstons, Sheckler and others that they got ready and left the fort a few days after, part going to Md. and others to Duncans Island Pa... This was early May (1719.] and in a few days Shecklers with some more Bucks County emigrants return... Shecklers returned to his Shy Beaver place, now occupied by Adam Speck... Sheckler in his trips back and forth up and down the river to Shoup's had different times cast longing glances at the river bottoms owned by Shoup, now called George Berkstresser place and at last he traded for at least a part of it to Silas Sabastian Shoup (we find his name written this way on the Weaver deed) giving in place of it his Shy Beaver improvement Sheckler built a house near where the spring is against the hill opposite to where the mansion house now stands which is occupied by the widow Berkstresser and Michael Savits And all of the land that was settled and improved prior to the return of the settlers in 1787 the Stoler and Sheckler is the only one that has remained in the name and was owned all the time by the same name and farmed for a livelyhood. T. E. LePhone...
By Saturday, July 15, 1780 the Forters at Shoups had sent one of their number, Joshua Davis, familiarly known as commissary Davis to the Big Cove to see if they could expect any aid from there. His return had been earnestly looked for but not returning they concluded to the mouth of clear water run, where Riddlesburg now is and do some fishing, and on this detail were several men and big boys, all well armed: among the men we learned was Frederick.
Sheckler, Philip Stoner, Michael Whetstone Petterson Cherry, and others. But there was one drawback to our leaving at once [Jul 1780] for two
families were absent from the Fort and were at their houses though the families of the fishing parties were in the Fort for protection while they were on the expedition The families that were out were Frederick Heater of the Valley Hill place and Rev Thomas Johnston of the Island place and they did not wish to leave those two behind, yet it was a perilous undertaking to warn them and Sabastian Shoup asked for two volunters to warn those two families. And though rather heavy and clumsy for one to be sent on such an errand, Frederick Sheckler was first to volunteer. His seven years service in the German Army had left an everlasting impression of duty that danger made it the more self binding to him. So he was sent to Frederick Heaters. He crossed the river below the mouth of Shoups run and crossed the hills as in this way he could avoid the Indiana as they had not time to be out of the Valley yet...The gathering of the stock together to start could be done in a very short time While this was done Peterson Cherry returned with the Johnston's Family and shortly after, Sheckler arrived at the Fort with all the Heater family except John, a boy about 17 years of age who he found dead at the fence before he reached the house Sheckler gave this bold report to his children and afterwards by them to us (See Chapter XLVII, Indians Force Abandonment of Fort). Frederick Sheckler was a township officer in the year 1786 Also we find that Huntingdon County was struck off from Bedford County in 1787 and present line runs about 100 rods south of the old mill dam... So from the facts which we have gathered, we find with the return of Sheckler, Shaubs and Stoner in 1785 commenced the first permanent settlement of this section.

Frederick Sheckler; Birth: 1754, Germany; Death: Jul. 18, 1829, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA; Note: The original headstone was a slab of fieldstone marked F.S. and disintegrated over time. The new headstone was erected by David Weaver, grandson of Barbara Sheckler Berkstresser, the daughter of Marie Catherine Sheckler. Information placed on stones erected by descendants are usually not the same information that was on the original stone, or even based on factual information, but more likely to be dictated by oral tradition and often is inaccurate. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~, From The Foster Scrapbook, Federick Sheckler, An Early Pioneer, Chapter LXVII FREDERICK SHECKLER: "We ail now notice some of the early settlers at what is now known as Shy Beaver and among others we find the name above given. He was born in Germany about the year 1754, and migrated to Bucks County. He married a German girl by the name of Mary C. Nomrow from Philadelphia, Pa. and moved to Shy Beaver and settled at the place where Adam Speck now lives, and had made some improvements before the Delaware Indians came down the Kittaning war path in July 1778, they were then compelled to leave their improvements and with a good many others go down to Bucks [<--incorrect] county again....".

RESEARCHER'S NOTES: They left Bucks county and settled in Peters township, Cumberland (now Franklin) county. Records of the two different Federick Sheckler's were co-mingled and the error perpetuated in subsequent documents.] prior to the Revolution.

MILITARY SERVICE - CUMBERLAND COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA
There is an unconfirmed record of Frederick Sheckler joining the The German Battalion at the beginning of the Revolutionary war. Many of the recruits were from the area in Cumberland county where Frederick Sheckler lived and where he later enlisted with the 4th Battalion.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR MILITIA ORGANIZATION: CUMBERLAND CO., PA.
4th Battalion in Cumberland County was formed out of Peters Township. Peters Township was carved out of Cumberland county to for Franklin county.
1780 - 4th BATTALION, Lt. Col. Samuel Culbertson, Peters Township; Cumberland County, 4th Company under Capt. John Orbison

      History of Cumberland County
"While this regiment was under marching orders for Amboy, near January 1, 1777, they took from such persons as were not associated, in Antrim and Peters Township, whatever arms were found in their possession, to be paid for according to appraisement by the Government. The Fourth Battalion was under Col. Samuel Lyon, and had in it the companies of Capts. John Purdy, of East Pennsborough, James McConnel, of Letterkenny, and, in 1778, of Jonathan Robinson, of Sherman's Valley; Stephen Stevenson, who was at first a lieutenant but afterward became a captain. The Fifth Battalion was commanded by Col. Joseph Armstrong, a veteran of the Indian war and of the expedition to Kittanning, and in 1756-57, a member of the Colonial Assembly. Most of this regiment was raised in Hamilton, Letterkenny and Lurgan Townships, and its companies at different times were under Capts, John Andrew, Robert Culbertson (for a time), Samuel Patton, John McConnel, Conrad Snider, William Thompson, Charles McClay (at one period), James McKee, James Gibson, John Rea, Jonathan Robinson, George Matthews and John Boggs. John Murphy was a lieutenant and John Martin ensign. Capt. McClay's men are said to have been over six feet in height and to have numbered 100, and the whole regiment was remarkable for its vigor and high spirit. It suffered severely at the battle of "Crooked Billet," in Berks County, May 4, 1778, when Gen. ____y was surprised and many of his men were butchered without mercy. The Sixth Battalion was commanded by Col. Samuel Culbertson, who had been a lieutenant-colonel in the First but was promoted to the command of the Sixth. John Work was the lieutenant-colonel; James McCammont, major; John Wilson, adjutant; Samuel Finley, quartermaster, and Richard Brownson, surgeon, and Patrick Jack, Samuel Patton, James Patterson, Joseph Culbertson, William Huston, Robert McCoy and John McConnel were at some periods captains."
