Notes from Bill Sanders:
Friedrich Ferdinand Eberling, b: September 26, 1825 in Dillenburg, Nassau. , Friedrich migrated to Texas with his parents (Carl and Catherine Eberling) aboard the Brig Johann Dethardt in 1845. The ship arrived in Galveston, Texas on January 12, 1846. He proceeded to the New Braunfels area with his parents, and settled about twenty-five miles southeast of New Braunfels in Sequin. Numerous questions could be asked as to why the Friedrich did not settle in New Braunfels, his original destination. Could he have arrived in the Seguin area and found his new bride and settled there for that reason? Could he have settled there (not in New Braunfels with his parents) because of the cholera epidemic that was devastating the New Braunfels area? Could his parents have actually died in or near Seguin while enroute to New Braunfels, and Friedrich decided to remain and settle in Seguin? Speculation is fruitless, because we will never know the reason he chose Seguin as his new home.
On May 29, 1853, Friedrich Eberling married Sophie W. Leihener , the daughter of Wilhelm Leihener and Marie (Gotthardt) Leihener. Evidently, Friedrich was content with his lot in life as a farmer and family man. Friedrich and Sophie lived together in Guadalupe County until 1898 when Friedrich passed away. The exact date of Friedrich's death is unknown. However, the Guadalupe County Court Probate Records indicate that Petition #1414 regarding the Last Will and Testament of Friedrich was filed for probate on June 4, 1898. Hence, we can narrow the date of Friedrich's death to before that date.
Friedrich's wife Sophie was the daughter of Wilhelm Leihener and Marie J. Gotthardt who migrated, along with their family (including Sophie) to Texas on the same ship (Johann Dethardt) that the Eberlings arrived. Sophie was born on January 3, 1834 in Emerichenhain Amt Rennerod. Sophie (Leihener) Eberling lived just short of seventy years of age and passed away on December 1, 1904 in Cibolo, Texas. As of this date, the burial site for both Friedrich and Sophie are unknown, but presumed to be in Guadalupe County. It might be noted that Sophie's father, Wilhelm Leihener is buried in the New Braunfels Cemetery.
The 1850 Federal Census for Comal or Guadalupe Counties does not show Friedrich . The 1860 Federal Census for Guadalupe County shows that Friedrich (34) is married to Sophia (26) and they have 3 children: Theodora (6), Paulina (1), and Wilhelmina (newborn). Friedrich's occupation is shown as a farmer.
The 1870 Federal Census for Guadalupe County shows that Friedrich (44) and his wife Sophia (36) reside with their 6 children: Theodora (16), Pauline (14), Wilhelmina (10), Ferdinand (7), Adolph (4), and Sophie (2
Robert R. Robinson, Jr., "The Bremers and Their Kin, in Germany and Texas", (Nortex Press, Wichita Falls, Texas), Pg. 1477, Robinson confirms Friedrich's date of birth and his place of birth.
Compiled and Edited by Chester W. And Ethel H. Geue, "A New Land Beckoned", Pg. 89, lists Friedrich as having the age of 19 in 1845 when his name appeared on the manifest of the Johann Dethardt.
Charles W. Kleinecke, "Fisher-Grant and G.E.C. Forever", (Charles W Kleinecke Publishing Co.), The question posed here should not even be considered. According to the manifest of the Johann Dethardt, Wilhelm Leihener and his family of six arrived on the same ship that Carl Eberling's family arrived on. Since Friedrich's future bride (Sophie Leihener) was also on board the Johann Dethardt (in fairly close quarters) it only seems reasonable to assume that Friedrich and Sophie either knew each other while still in Germany, or certainly met aboard ship. They definitely did not meet in Seguin (or anywhere around that location) and fall in love and get married, they had already known each other for several months. They no doubt traveled together to the area of Seguin and settled there for other reasons-reasons which now remain a mystery. The fact is that Friedrich and Sophie, at the latest, knew each other when they left Breman for Galveston in September of 1845.
Personal observation; this is also considered doubtful because the epidemic originally started in the Indianola area and spread along the 152 mile trail to the New Braunfels area. It can be assumed that the epidemic was just as strong in the Seguin area as in the New Braunfels area.
