He was a 1956 graduate of Karnes City High School. He was retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad and had been a lifelong rancher. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ben Kortz. Tom is survived by two daughters, Susanne Kortz of Folsom, La. and Tanja Kortz-Maslanka and husband Patrick of Fort Worth; two brothers, Alvin Kortz and wife Kathy of Seguin and Jerry Kortz of Helena; two sisters, Joyce Escobedo and husband Frank of Karnes City and Patricia Boerm and husband Larry of Pettus; and one grandson, Patrick Ryan Maslanka of Fort Worth.
