      Mary Kortz, of Helena, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2006 at Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital. She was 91 years, 1 month and 23 days.
      Mary was born September 5, 1915 in Panna Maria. She married Joe P. Kortz on January 18, 1937 in Panna Maria. She was a housewife and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the Rosary Circle. She lived all her life in the Ruckman Community near Helena, Texas.
      Mary is survived by her sons, Alvin (Kathy) Kortz of Seguin, Jerry Kortz of Helena and Tom (Nettie Nixon) Kortz of Yorktown; daughters, Patricia (Larry) Boerm of Pettus and Joyce (Frank) Escobedo of Karnes City; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren.
      Preceded in death by her husband, Joe P. Kortz; father, John Opiela; mother, Katherine Urbanczyk Opiela; son, Ben Kortz; sister, Rosie Opiela Bennet; and brothers, Clem Opiela, Domin Opiela, Felux Opiela, Henry Opiela and Theodore Opiela.
      A rosary will be recited Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. in Rhodes Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panna Maria with Rev. Wojciech Reisch officiating.
      Burial followed at the Panna Maria Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Albert, Jeffrey Baggett, Allen Kortz, Brian Kortz, Michael Kortz and James Stevens.

      Tom Kortz; Birth: May 26, 1938; Death: Aug. 4, 2008; Note: Tom Kortz, 70, of Yorktown, Texas, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2008. He was born to Joe and Mary Opiela Kortz on May 26, 1938, in Karnes City. A member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Panna Maria, Tom was also a chaplain for the Runge VFW. He was a 1956 graduate of Karnes City High School. He was retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad and had been a lifelong rancher. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ben Kortz. Tom is survived by two daughters, Susanne Kortz of Folsom, La. and Tanja Kortz-Maslanka and husband Patrick of Fort Worth; two brothers, Alvin Kortz and wife Kathy of Seguin and Jerry Kortz of Helena; two sisters, Joyce Escobedo and husband Frank of Karnes City and Patricia Boerm and husband Larry of Pettus; and one grandson, Patrick Ryan Maslanka of Fort Worth.
