      Ernst was serving in the German army when the rest of the Luetge family traveled to America in 1881. Ernst came to America in 1883 with the Herman Bartram family. Ernst was a farmer, drove mail from New Ulm to Schoenau, sang in the Maennerchor (was the first of direct German descent to join the Helvetia Singers which was made up of the early Swiss settlers), and played an active part in the community beef club.
